Unawatuna by Bicycle — Half-Day Plantation Ride

A cycle tour through cinnamon plantations, tea gardens, and rubber trees in Unawatuna, south of Sri Lanka

Unawatuna, a coastal settlement south of Galle, sits at the centre of Sri Lanka's cinnamon-growing region. A half-day bicycle route through the surrounding plantations and agricultural land offers direct access to the rhythms of village life and smallholder farming. The route passes through cinnamon estates—where local guides explain the labour-intensive peeling process—tea gardens, and rubber tree groves. Terrain is predominantly flat with gentle, occasional rises; the pace allows for stops, photography, and conversation with farmers and residents. The experience is structured around observation of working landscape rather than spectacle.
