Thailand: Rail, Ruins & Rainforest — 13 Days

From Bangkok's Chinatown through WWII sites, three ancient capitals, and highland villages to Khao Sok's limestone lakes

This 13-day itinerary moves methodically through Thailand's layered history and geography. It begins in Bangkok's markets and temples, then westward to Kanchanaburi's World War II railway sites — including the original Bridge on the River Kwai and the Death Railway itself. The route then traces three former Thai capitals: Ayutthaya (1350–1776), Sukhothai (founded 13th century), and Phitsanulok, before ascending to Chiang Mai and a night in a Lisu hilltribe lodge in the northern highlands. The final days shift south to Khao Sok National Park, where rainforest meets limestone geography — floating bungalows on Cheow Lan Lake, bamboo raft journeys, and an early-morning wildlife safari complete the arc. Transportation varies intentionally: train, long-tail boat, bicycle, horse cart, and vehicle, each revealing a different layer of the landscape.

  • Walk across the Bridge on the River Kwai and tour the Kanchanaburi War Cemetery and Thai-Burma Railway Museum
