Sri Lanka: Temple, Rock & Elephant — 3 Days

Kandy, Sigiriya and Dambulla: cave temples, rock fortress and wildlife sanctuary

This three-day itinerary moves through Sri Lanka's central cultural zone, linking the island's primary religious and archaeological sites with a working elephant orphanage. The route covers Kandy—home to the Temple of the Tooth Relic and traditional dance—the 5th-century rock fortress of Sigiriya, the Dambulla cave temples with their Buddhist murals, and a visit to Pinnawala, where over 60 orphaned elephants are maintained in a semi-natural setting. The itinerary assumes arrival in Colombo with onward transfer to Kandy on Day 1, and concludes with a return transfer to the airport on Day 3. Each stop involves walking, climbing, or guided observation across the three days.

Day by day

1Colombo to Kandy via PinnawalaColombo to Kandy · Kandy · Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage · local tea factory and nearby plantation · Temple of the Tooth Relic, Kandy
Upon arrival, a representative and driver meet the traveller for transfer to Kandy by road. The first major stop is Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, where approximately 60 rescued and orphaned elephants occupy a semi-natural riverside habitat. Visitors typically observe elephants bathing and feeding in the river during mid-morning or afternoon hours. Depending on flight timing, an optional detour to a local tea factory and nearby plantation allows exposure to Sri Lanka's tea industry—including observation of processing equipment and dried tea in various grades. Arrival in Kandy occurs in late afternoon. Evening activities center on the Temple of the Tooth Relic, Kandy's principal Buddhist shrine, which houses a tooth artifact of Siddhartha Gautama; the temple compound itself offers views over the city and the man-made lake. A traditional Kandyan dance performance may be attended before returning to the hotel for overnight rest.
2Kandy to Sigiriya: Spice Gardens, Ancient Caves and Rock FortressSigiriya · spice garden · Dambulla Cave Temples
Travel northeast from Kandy toward Sigiriya, stopping first at a spice garden to walk among clove, cinnamon, cardamom, and turmeric plants. Learn about traditional harvesting and drying methods before continuing to Dambulla Cave Temples, where five caves shelter Buddhist statues and murals. The final destination is Sigiriya's 200-meter rock fortress, crowned with 5th-century citadel ruins. The climb via internal staircases leads to panoramic views across the landscape. Return to your hotel in Sigiriya as evening settles.
3Sigiriya to Colombo Airportlocal markets · Colombo, the capital city · Colombo's airport (Bandaranaike International Airport)
The final morning allows for a leisurely breakfast and checkout from the hotel. Remaining flight time may permit a self-directed visit to local markets or a stop in Colombo, the capital city, for last-minute shopping or sightseeing. Transfer to Colombo's airport (Bandaranaike International Airport) occurs with sufficient time to meet the departure flight. The itinerary concludes upon check-in for the return journey.
