Sri Lanka: Beaches, Ruins & Tea Mountains — 18 Days

Beach and canal exploration, archaeological sites at Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa, Knuckles mountain trekking, whale watching, and rural farmwork in one continuous itinerary.

This 18-day itinerary moves through Sri Lanka's coastal, cultural, and mountainous regions. It begins in the Dutch-era canal systems of Negombo, proceeds to the archaeological sites of Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa in the north-central zone, crosses to the remote eastern coast near Ampara, and enters the Knuckles mountain range — the island's highest trekking terrain — before descending into the tea plantations and cloud forests of Nuwara Eliya. A stint in agricultural farmland near Wellawaya offers time spent with local farmers and opportunities for elephant observation in natural habitat. The route concludes on the southern coast around Mirissa with whale-watching excursions and snorkeling. Accommodation ranges from small hotels and guest houses to tree house lodges, farm stays, and a basic tented camp. All transfers are private with an English-speaking driver; local guides lead activities in their respective regions. The itinerary is designed for travellers 12 and older and operates most reliably between November and March.
