Skardu & Baltistan: Lakes, Forts & High Plateaus — 6 Days

Kachura Lakes, Shigar Fort, and Deosai Plains in the Karakoram gateway region

Skardu lies at the southern gateway to the Karakoram Range, in Baltistan. The region centers on high-altitude geography — turquoise glacial lakes, steep valleys, and some of the world's highest inhabited plateaus — alongside layered human settlement: 400-year-old stone forts, ancient Buddhist rock carvings, and Balti villages whose architecture and dialect remain distinct within Pakistan. This six-day itinerary moves between Skardu's immediate lakeside attractions (the heart-shaped Kachura Lakes and the Shangrila Resort area), the restored Shigar Fort in the adjacent valley, the carved rock faces near Satpara, and the high-altitude grassland of Deosai Plains. The route prioritizes ground-based exploration — jeep excursions, village walks, boat rides — rather than technical mountaineering, and incorporates stays in local guesthouses and regional hotels. The trip works year-round, though July through September and April through May bring the clearest weather and most open high passes.

Best time to go: april-oct
