Seoul to Busan by Bike: Han River Trail to the Coast — 8 Days

A dedicated cycling route across South Korea's Four Rivers Path network, from Seoul's riverside trails to Busan's port and beach.

This eight-day journey follows South Korea's purpose-built long-distance cycling infrastructure from central Seoul to the coast at Busan. The route traces the Han River north of the city, climbs Namsan Mountain on roads closed to private traffic, then carries east through agricultural flatlands and riverside parks toward the coast. A support vehicle moves luggage between stops each day, leaving riders free to move unencumbered across daily distances that build progressive fitness without punishing climbs. The Four Rivers Path itself—a color-coded, well-maintained network—carries most of the mileage. Along the way, the ride passes through Paldang, a gathering point for cyclists across the country; Icheon, whose ceramic heritage reaches back centuries; and Yongin Folk Village, where reconstructed pre-modern architecture and working craft demonstrations occupy a full afternoon. The final two days move by express train to Busan, where lighter city bikes carry riders through the port district and riverside paths before finishing at Haeundae Beach.

Highlights

  • Early-morning departure along the Han River's north bank as Seoul's skyline recedes and the Ari Trail opens ahead
  • Climbing Namsan Mountain by bike on roads closed to private vehicles—a quiet wooded ascent through switchbacks above the city
  • Arrival at Paldang's riverside, where repair shops, open-air cafes, and cyclists from across Korea gather along the path
  • Cycling through the rice-growing flatlands around Yangpyeong before descending into Icheon, a city whose ceramic work is held in major international collections
  • A full afternoon exploring Yongin Folk Village—reconstructed historical architecture, working craft demonstrations, and the material culture of pre-modern Korea
  • Final coastal ride through Busan's port district and river routes, finishing at Haeundae Beach with a week's distance behind you

Day by day

1Arrival in Seoul: Welcome Briefing and Bike FittingHapjeong Junibino
Guests are met in the afternoon for a welcome briefing, safety review, and individual bike fitting. The hotel, Hapjeong Junibino, occupies a navigable neighborhood in central Seoul and serves as the base for the first three nights. The evening begins with a full Korean dinner—soup, rice, grilled meats, and a spread of banchan—offering time to settle before the first riding day begins. Helmets are required for all riding; guests may bring their own or arrange a purchase on arrival.
2Han River North Bank and the Ari TrailHan River North Bank · Ari Trail · Leeum Museum
The morning ride heads north along the Han River, picking up the Ari Trail—one of Seoul's more established riverside cycling sections, known for its well-maintained surface and a succession of open-air cafes and garden installations. The route then crosses to the Gangnam side and loops back toward the hotel, with the support vehicle accompanying throughout. The afternoon remains unstructured; the neighborhood offers the Leeum Museum, local cafes, and public bathhouses for independent exploration.
3Nodeul Island, Seoul Forest, and Namsan MountainNodeul Island · Seoul Forest · Namsan Mountain · Yeouido Park
Luggage transfers to the support vehicle early and the ride begins with breakfast taken en route. The morning route passes through Nodeul Island—a small riverside arts and leisure site—then continues through Yeouido Park and the larger green expanse of Seoul Forest, which functions as both a family park and an active cycling corridor. The final section climbs Namsan Mountain via roads closed to private vehicles, offering a quieter ascent than the mountain's general popularity might suggest. Riders return to the hotel by early afternoon, leaving the evening free.
4River Trail East to PaldangPaldang · Han River · Dolce Hotel or glamping site
The route departs early and follows the Han River eastward out of Seoul, with the city's skyline giving way gradually to open riverside terrain as the path approaches Paldang. This stretch passes through several parks, bike-repair stops, and trail-side cafes—the infrastructure of a country invested in long-distance cycling. Paldang has become a gathering point for cyclists from across Korea; the riverside at arrival is rarely quiet. Accommodation at either the Dolce Hotel or a glamping site spans one night only. A midpoint lunch is available along the route.
5Rice Lands and Agricultural Yangpyeong to IcheonIcheon · agricultural flatlands surrounding Yangpyeong · Intrada Hotel
The route continues southeast through the agricultural flatlands surrounding Yangpyeong, with rice fields lining both sides of the river trail through the morning before descending into Icheon by mid-afternoon. Icheon carries a documented ceramic heritage extending back centuries; its kilns have produced work now held in major collections worldwide. The afternoon remains free to visit the city's pottery districts, markets, or public bathhouses. Lunch is included along the route. Accommodation is at the Intrada Hotel.
6Morning Ride to Yongin Folk VillageYongin Folk Village · Lee Design Hotel
Most luggage transfers directly to Busan by porterage; guests carry only an overnight bag for this stop. The morning ride leads to Yongin Folk Village, a large-scale site combining reconstructed historical architecture with working craft demonstrations and museum facilities. It functions less as a theme park than as a serious preservation effort for Korea's pre-modern material culture—the kind of place that rewards slower attention and unhurried exploration. The afternoon, from early afternoon through early evening, is allocated to the site. Entry is included. Accommodation is at Lee Design Hotel.
7Express Train to Busan and Coastal Rideexpress train to Busan · Kolon Sea Cloud hotel near Haeundae Beach · Haeundae Beach · port district, riverside paths, and parks
The group takes the express train to Busan in the morning, arriving around midday. City bikes—lighter and more suited to urban riding than the trail bikes used earlier in the week—are provided for Busan's routes. After dropping bags at the Kolon Sea Cloud hotel near Haeundae Beach, the afternoon ride covers the port district, riverside paths, and parks before finishing at the beach. A farewell dinner follows in the evening. This is the final full day of riding.
8Morning in Busan and Return to SeoulSeoul station · Busan neighborhood
A free morning allows time to walk the beach, visit the neighborhood, or simply pause before the return journey. The group takes the high-speed KTX train back to Seoul—approximately two and a half hours—with the tour concluding on arrival at Seoul station.
