The boat offers an introduction to the country's geography and what lies ahead on the road. A Laos-style picnic lunch is served aboard. Overnight accommodation is in Pakbeng.
2Pakbeng to Oudomxay — Karst CyclingOudomxay · rural terrain inhabited by hill tribe communities—Phu Thai, Thai Lu, Hmong, Thai Dam, Lao, and Khamu villages · weaving villages · 300-meter pass
After a brief transfer by vehicle, cycling begins in rural terrain inhabited by hill tribe communities—Phu Thai, Thai Lu, Hmong, Thai Dam, Lao, and Khamu villages dot the route. The region remains relatively untouched by heavy tourism, and residents are accustomed to visitors passing through. Stops at weaving villages reveal families working traditional looms in the shade. A 300-meter pass climb leads to a long descent into Oudomxay, the provincial capital. Approximately 90 kilometers cycled. Overnight in Oudomxay.
3Oudomxay to Nong Khiaw — High Altitude DescentOudomxay to Nong Khiaw · Nong Khiaw · Pak Mong
After a one-hour uphill transfer by vehicle, cycling begins at 1,300 meters elevation in terrain dominated by Hmong villages. Wide views span the region before a long descent brings riders to Pak Mong for lunch. From there, a smaller road winds into the limestone karst that frames Nong Khiaw. Overnight accommodation sits on a resort with views across the Nam Ou River and surrounding mountains. Approximately 90–120 kilometers cycled, difficulty level challenging.
4Nam Ou Valley: River Boat and Cascade TrekNam Ou River · a small village along the waterway · cascade system known locally as the 100 waterfalls · the falls · villagers' trail across the top of the cascades · the settlement · Nong Khiaw
The day opens with a boat ride up the Nam Ou River, stopping at a small village along the waterway to observe daily life. From there, hiking continues through streams and rice paddies toward a cascade system known locally as the 100 waterfalls. The trek passes through dense jungle with water sounds constant, moving upward through cascades as the guide leads the way. A local-style lunch is prepared on the falls themselves. The return follows a villagers' trail across the top of the cascades, offering views down the Nam Ou valley before descending back into the settlement. The afternoon allows additional time to observe village routines. Overnight in Nong Khiaw.
