Mongolia: Kharkhorin and the Mini Gobi — 3 Days

360 kilometres across steppe and sand to the ancient Mongol capital, with camel riding through 90-kilometre dunes

This three-day journey traces the historical spine of the Mongolian steppe, moving from Ulaanbaatar southwestward to Kharkhorin, seat of the ancient Mongol Empire. The route crosses Elsen Tasarkhai—a 90-kilometre sand formation that cuts across three provincial borders and anchors the landscape between rolling grassland and desert—before reaching Kharkhorin itself, where the remains of Erdene Zuu monastery stand built partly from rubble of the empire's ancient capital. The itinerary also incorporates the Khushuutsgiin museum, dedicated to the Turkic period and the empires that shaped Mongolia's written and material culture. Each stop names a specific historical layer: Turkic monuments and administrative centres, Buddhist monastic architecture, and the physical artefacts of imperial transition.

Day by day

1Ulaanbaatar to Kharkhorin via Elsen TasarkhaiUlaanbaatar · Elsen Tasarkhai · local ger camp · Erdene Zuu monastery
Departure from Ulaanbaatar southwestward toward Kharkhorin, the site of the ancient Mongol Empire's capital. The 360-kilometre route passes through Elsen Tasarkhai, also called the Mini Gobi, where sand dunes stretch approximately 90 kilometres across the border regions of three Mongolian provinces. This area marks the transition zone where steppe grassland meets active dune field. A lunch stop in Elsen Tasarkhai precedes a camel ride along the dunes before resuming travel to Kharkhorin. Upon arrival, check-in occurs at a local ger camp. Depending on daylight remaining, a visit to Erdene Zuu monastery follows. Constructed in the late 16th century, the complex was built partly from salvaged stone taken from the ruins of the Mongol capital itself. At its height, the monastery housed over 2,000 monks. Though damaged during communist-era purges in the 1930s, several temples remain intact. Excavations in the surrounding area have yielded artefacts from the period of the empire.
2Kharkhorin: Imperial Centre and Turkic HeritageKhushuutsgiin · Kharkhorin Museum · Monument of the Khans · Turtle Stone · Elsen Tasarkhai
Following breakfast, travel to Khushuutsgiin to visit the museum dedicated to the Turkic period. The Turks dominated the steppes during this era and controlled the Orkhon Valley, where their own capital stood. Historical records credit the Turks with introducing written script to Mongolia and advancing metallurgical craftsmanship. The museum displays artefacts recovered from the valley, alongside monuments to Bilge Khan, the most prominent Turkic ruler of the 8th century, known for his efforts to maintain independence against the rival Tang dynasty. Return to Kharkhorin for lunch and visits to the Kharkhorin Museum, Monument of the Khans, and the Turtle Stone, a marker from the pre-Mongol imperial period. Afternoon travel returns to Elsen Tasarkhai for overnight at a ger camp.
3Elsen Tasarkhai to UlaanbaatarElsen Tasarkhai to Ulaanbaatar · Ulaanbaatar
After breakfast, the 280-kilometre drive northeastward returns to Ulaanbaatar, with lunch on arrival and hotel check-in.
