Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng by Bicycle — 6 Days

This cycling journey takes us deep into the heart of northern Laos, where quiet farm roads, gravel tracks, and hidden valleys reveal a world far beyond the main tourist trail.

This six-day cycling route moves from Luang Prabang south to Vang Vieng across northern Laos on a mix of surfaces—dirt tracks, gravel roads, and tarmac—with vehicle support throughout. The first day crosses the Mekong and rides the Chomphet loop to a farmstead. Day 2 includes Kuang Si Falls and a midday transfer to Kasi. Days 3 through 5 follow progressively more remote roads through Muang Met and Muang Fuang toward Vang Vieng, with a 52-kilometer gravel stage featuring a substantial climb on Day 4. The final day offers a 35-kilometer optional loop around Vang Vieng with swimming access to the Nam Song River. Daily distances range from 35 to 62 kilometers. Day by day

1Chomphet Loop to Kiao Niao FarmsteadChomphet · Kiao Niao Farmstead · Mekong River
The route begins by crossing the Mekong River to access the Chomphet side of Luang Prabang, a less-traveled area. The first 55 kilometers follow a mix of dirt and gravel tracks through rustic villages, small forest sections, and rice paddies. With lighter tourist traffic than Luang Prabang's central streets, the ride passes regular local activity—farmers, domestic animals, roadside commerce. The day concludes at Kiao Niao Farmstead, an eco-retreat set among gardens and fields, where dinner and overnight accommodation are provided.
2Kuang Si Falls and Transfer to KasiKuang Si Falls · Kuang Si Falls to Kasi · farmstead to Kuang Si Falls
After breakfast at the farmstead, the route heads toward Kuang Si Falls, a multi-tiered cascade with pools of turquoise water formed by mineral deposits. The 50-kilometer ride to the falls follows gravel and village roads through countryside. A swimming break at the pools provides a midday pause. From Kuang Si, the route continues through scenic countryside toward Muang Nan. In the afternoon, a vehicle transfer carries the group to Kasi, reducing fatigue before the climbs of the coming days.
3Kasi to Muang Met on New TarmacKasi to Muang Met · Muang Met
Day 3 covers 52 kilometers on recently laid tarmac surface, providing a smoother riding day. The route progresses through rolling hills with mountain views visible from higher sections. Villages and farmland form the landscape throughout. Muang Met, the day's destination, is a small town situated among agricultural fields and forested hills, offering a quieter overnight setting.
4Muang Met to Muang Fuang: Gravel ClimbMuang Met to Muang Fuang · Nam Lik River
Day 4 is the route's most demanding stage: 48 kilometers of gravel roads featuring a significant climb into remote terrain. The ascent crosses valleys with limestone outcrops and forested slopes. The higher sections provide expansive views across the landscape. Muang Fuang sits at the end of this climb, a settlement far from main roads. In the evening, a sunset boat trip on the Nam Lik River offers a viewing vantage for the karst peaks surrounding the river valley.
5Muang Fuang to Vang Vieng: Limestone ApproachVang Vieng · mountains · viewpoint overlooking the river valley · nearby cave systems
The final 62 kilometers begin with a loop ride around the mountains and a short walk to a viewpoint overlooking the river valley. The route then continues on gravel and deteriorating tarmac, winding through increasingly dramatic terrain. Limestone karst mountains rise sharply from the valleys as the group approaches Vang Vieng. The landscape shift is pronounced: vertical stone formations replace gentle hills. Vang Vieng's riverside location and mountain backdrop create a distinct setting from the previous five days. Upon arrival, time permits visits to nearby cave systems accessible from the town.
6Vang Vieng Gravel Loop and Nam Song RiverVang Vieng · Nam Song River
The final day offers a lighter pace: a 35-kilometer optional gravel loop around Vang Vieng with access to swimming holes along the Nam Song River. The route uses backroads circling the town and valley, with multiple opportunities to enter the water. The day accommodates individual pacing and choice, concluding with a group gathering in the evening.
