Lhasa, Gyantse & Shigatse: Monasteries and Mountain Passes — 5 Days

A private route through Tibet's religious centers and high-altitude geography, linking Lhasa's Potala Palace with the monasteries of Gyantse and Shigatse.

This five-day private journey traces a south-westerly arc from Lhasa through two major mountain passes—Khamba-la at 4,750 meters and Karo-la at 5,045 meters—to reach Gyantse and Shigatse, Tibet's second-largest city. The route intersects key Buddhist monasteries: Pelkor Choede in Gyantse, with its distinctive eight-story Kumbum chapel; and Tashilumpo in Shigatse, seat of the Panchen Lamas. Between formal sites, the itinerary includes village visits and time in smaller towns, offering perspective on daily Tibetan life alongside monastic and historical architecture. All activities are private, with an English-speaking guide throughout, and the journey is calibrated for altitude adjustment.

Day by day

1Arrival in LhasaLhasa airport or train station · Lhasa River through highland terrain · standard hotel in the city
You will be met at Lhasa airport or train station and presented with a white katak scarf in welcome. The airport lies 100 kilometers away in an adjacent valley; the train station is closer to the city center. The drive from either arrival point follows the Lhasa River through highland terrain, with occasional stops for photographs of local villages. There are no planned activities – rest, relax, drink plenty of water and adjust to the altitude. Accommodation is at a standard hotel in the city.
2Mountain Passes and Lakes: Khamba-la, Yamdrok Tso, and Karo-laYamdrok Tso · Khamba-la Pass · Karo-la Pass · Gyantse Dzong
The five-hour road journey from Lhasa to Gyantse is designed around viewpoints. From Khamba-la Pass at 4,750 meters, the turquoise expanse of Yamdrok Tso (also known as Yamdrok Lake) comes into view—a high-altitude glacial lake formed by snowmelt from surrounding peaks. The road descends to skirt the lake's edge, then climbs again to Karo-la Pass at 5,045 meters, where Nojin Gangzang Glacier dominates the landscape to the south. Multiple photo stops are built into the route. Upon arrival in Gyantse, a short walk ascends to Gyantse Dzong, a fortified structure that overlooks the town and surrounding valleys.
3Pelkor Choede Monastery, Village Visit, and Arrival in ShigatsePelkor Choede Monastery · Gyantse Kumbum · local Tibetan family home · Tashilumpo Monastery · Shigatse town market
The day opens with a visit to Pelkor Choede Monastery, founded by the King of Gyantse in the 15th century. Unlike many Tibetan monasteries, it does not align exclusively with a single Buddhist tradition; what remains of its original complex continues as an active religious center. Within the grounds stands Gyantse Kumbum, an eight-story structure of distinctive conical profile. The interior is divided into hundreds of small chapels stacked vertically, each housing Buddhist images—Buddhas, protective deities, saints, and ritual demons. After Pelkor Choede, a short drive through farming villages leads to Shigatse. Along the way, a stop is made at a local Tibetan family home to observe daily domestic life and routines. In Shigatse itself, the afternoon is open: visitors may walk the kora (ritual circumambulation path) around Tashilumpo Monastery with pilgrims, or visit the town market.
4Tashilumpo Monastery and Return to LhasaTashilumpo Monastery · Yarlung Tsangpo River valley
Tashilumpo Monastery is visited in the early morning, when light enters its courtyards and the buildings display their interior decoration—thangka paintings, religious statuary, and architectural detail accumulated across centuries of patronage by successive Panchen Lamas. Tashilumpo Monastery is home to the Panchen Lamas. The return drive to Lhasa follows the Yarlung Tsangpo River valley, one of Tibet's major river corridors, and takes approximately seven to eight hours including a meal break.
5Departureairport or train station
The final morning is free. A transfer to the airport or train station is provided at the scheduled time for your onward journey.
