Laos by Bike: Luang Prabang to Vientiane — 7 Days

A bicycle journey from Laos's cultural heartland through limestone valleys and mountain passes to the Mekong capital.

This seven-day cycling route travels the length of northern Laos between its two principal cities, beginning in Luang Prabang—a UNESCO-listed former royal capital where colonial architecture and Buddhist temples sit along the Mekong River—and finishing in Vientiane, the modern capital. The route climbs through agricultural valleys and limestone karst, passes through Hmong villages and roadside settlements, and includes time in Vang Vieng, a town built around caves and river gorges. Most days cover between 27 and 80 kilometers on a mix of tarmac, gravel, and single-track dirt roads. The terrain is steepest in the middle section, particularly on the approach to Kasi, with gentler cycling toward both ends of the tour. Riders encounter minimal vehicle traffic outside of towns and stay in modest hotels in each location. The itinerary includes a trek to Kuang Si Waterfall, boat travel on Nam Ngum Lake, and visits to protected wildlife areas and cave systems.

Day by day

1Luang Prabang: Cross-Mekong Loop and Village ExplorationMekong River · rice fields and working farmland · villages · ferry landing · restaurant near the ferry · local vocational restaurant
Meet your guide in early morning and receive a bike fit and safety briefing on a mountain bike. A short ride takes you to the Mekong River, where a ferry crossing delivers you to the tour's starting point on the opposite bank. The day unfolds as a looping circuit of approximately 20 kilometers on dirt roads and single tracks—mostly medium-paced riding with sections of climbing. The route passes through rice fields and working farmland with minimal tourist presence and no vehicle traffic. You'll stop in villages to sample local snacks and observe daily routines; a second stop offers cold drinks before continuing on narrower trails through agricultural land. As the loop closes, you return to the ferry landing via a brief stretch of tarmac. Lunch is taken at a restaurant near the ferry, and you'll have views back toward Luang Prabang's temples and riverfront throughout the ride. That evening, dinner at a local vocational restaurant allows time to debrief the day and prepare for the week ahead.
2Kuang Si Waterfall: Trek and Ride from Long Lao VillageKuang Si Waterfall · Hmong village of Long Lao · Long Lao to Luang Prabang · return ride to Luang Prabang
A short transfer reaches the Hmong village of Long Lao, home to around 80 families. The community maintains an eight-kilometer trail that climbs 250 meters to the summit of Kuang Si Waterfall. After the trek, you'll swim in the pools above the main cascade before cycling the 27 kilometers back to Luang Prabang on descending terrain (losing 160 meters of elevation). An ice-cream stop breaks the return ride.
3Mountain Crossing to Kasi: Two-Stage Ascent and DescentXieng Ngern · mountain viewpoint · Xieng Ngern to Pong Dong Village · mountain viewpoint to Kasi Valley
A two-hour transfer by minivan takes you to Xieng Ngern. The day splits into two cycling sections separated by a minivan ride to a mountain viewpoint. The first leg covers 37 kilometers from Xieng Ngern to Pong Dong Village, climbing 580 meters with a descent of 320 meters on a mix of road surfaces. After a lunch break and photography stop at the viewpoint, the second section begins—a descent into the Kasi Valley. This portion loses nearly 1,900 meters of elevation, making it the most sustained downhill of the tour. The total daily elevation gain is 600 meters against 1,900 meters of descent.
4Kasi to Vang Vieng: Rolling Approach and Cave ExplorationKasi to Vang Vieng · Vang Vieng · Tham Xang or Tham Hoi caves
Today's 60 kilometers on well-paved roads follows gently rolling terrain—a notable easement after the previous day's descent. The route reaches Vang Vieng by lunchtime. The afternoon allows a visit to Tham Xang or Tham Hoi caves, which sit on the banks of the Nam Song River among dramatic limestone formations. A swim is possible if time permits. You'll finish the day watching the sunset over the mountains just traversed, with a Lao beer in hand.
5Vang Vieng Summit Trek and Blue Lagoon OptionVang Vieng · Big Pha Ngern · Blue Lagoon pools
The morning features a vigorous and steep trek up Big Pha Ngern, taking two and a half to three hours to reach the summit. The reward is a panoramic view across the Song Valley—the landscape you'll have cycled through over the previous days becomes legible from above. You'll return to Vang Vieng by lunchtime. The afternoon is open for a swim at one of the Blue Lagoon pools or another cave visit. An optional hot air balloon ride is available for an additional fee. Total riding for the day is 35 kilometers on easier terrain.
6Nam Ngum Lake: Boat Journey and Lakeside CyclingNam Ngum · Route 10 along the lake's southern edge · Nam Pien Yorla Pa resort
After breakfast, a transfer brings you to Nam Ngum, Laos's largest artificial lake at 250 square kilometers. A two-hour boat ride crosses the water to your lakeside accommodation. After settling in, the afternoon resumes cycling on Route 10 along the lake's southern edge, skirting the national park boundary. The ride covers 80 kilometers to Nam Pien Yorla Pa resort on a mix of paved and gravel roads, climbing 360 meters and descending 420 meters. You'll end the day watching the sunset over the water.
7Nam Ngum to Vientiane: Wildlife Center and Capital ArrivalLaos Wildlife Conservation Trust facility · rice paddies beneath the Phou Khao Khouay mountain range · Patuxai Monument · restaurant on the Mekong's bank
After a final breakfast at the resort, you cycle to the Laos Wildlife Conservation Trust facility to visit their protection programs for endangered Southeast Asian species. The route then continues through rice paddies beneath the Phou Khao Khouay mountain range before entering Vientiane's suburbs and reaching the city center along the Mekong River. Total distance is 67 kilometers with 170 meters of climbing and descent combined. A stop at Patuxai Monument allows a final photograph before a closing dinner at a restaurant on the Mekong's bank, finishing the tour with local cuisine and river views.
