Khuvsgul Lake by Air — 4 Days

Remote alpine lake on the Siberian frontier, reindeer herders, and optional trekking and horseback exploration

Khuvsgul Lake, Asia's second-largest freshwater body, sits on Mongolia's northern border with Russia, straddling the transition zone between Central Asian steppe and boreal forest. A morning flight from Ulaanbaatar to the town of Moron cuts travel time substantially; from there, a 120-kilometer drive delivers you to the lake shore and a tourist camp positioned for immediate access to the water and surrounding terrain. The region is home to the Tsaatan people—also called Dukha—who maintain one of Mongolia's last reindeer-herding cultures. The itinerary provides two full days for self-directed activity: boat excursions on the lake itself, horseback riding through taiga forest and open meadow, visits to Tsaatan family encampments, or shoreline trekking. Wildlife sightings may include ibex, argali sheep, elk, and moose, though no sighting is guaranteed.
