Hong Kong to Chengdu: Karst Mountains, Rice Terraces & Giant Pandas — 8 Days

From Hong Kong's harbor through Yangshuo's limestone landscape and Longji's terraced valleys to Chengdu's panda sanctuaries via fast rail and local bus.

Southern China's terrain moves from the vertical drama of limestone karst around Yangshuo through terraced rice valleys that have been farmed for over 650 years at Longji, then overland by bullet train to Chengdu, where giant pandas are bred and protected. The route connects three distinct geographies—karst peaks, mountain agriculture, and urban center—by bicycle, hiking, and rail. Days are structured with guided activities in the mornings and afternoons left unscheduled, allowing time to linger in villages, join optional cooking classes, or visit markets at your own pace. Accommodation ranges from riverside hotels to village guesthouses to urban hostels, each positioned within or immediately adjacent to the day's primary activity.

Day by day

1Hong Kong to Yangshuo via High-Speed Rail and Public BusYangshuo · Hong Kong's hotel lobby · high-speed rail station
Meet in Hong Kong's hotel lobby and travel overland to the high-speed rail station. The rail service carries you southwest toward Guilin in approximately three hours, after which a two-hour public bus journey delivers you into Yangshuo—a rural town set within a limestone karst landscape where peaks rise abruptly from fields and rivers. Upon arrival, an orientation walk with your local guide familiarizes you with the town's layout and nearby pathways. Yangshuo serves as your base for the next three nights.
2Bicycle Tour Through Yangshuo Countryside and Moon HillYangshuo countryside · Moon Hill · local family home
After breakfast, depart town by bicycle into the surrounding countryside. The ride reveals how China's rural agricultural systems operate—terraced fields, water channels, farmer movements through seasons—while the limestone peaks define the skyline at every turn. Stop at Moon Hill, identified by its natural crescent-moon-shaped arch carved through the rock face; the steep climbing path to the summit is optional but provides extended views across the karst basin. Midday, lunch is served at a local family home, featuring dishes prepared from produce grown in nearby fields. The afternoon is yours to spend resting, exploring a local market, or moving through the town at leisure.
3Yangshuo: Optional Activities and Self-Directed ExplorationYangshuo · local farmers' market · surrounding paths and villages
The day is unscheduled. Options include joining a Tai Chi session with a local master in the early morning, attending a cooking class focused on regional techniques, or visiting the local farmers' market to observe daily commerce and seasonal produce. Yangshuo is also known for rock climbing and caving; your guide can arrange either activity if desired. Many travelers use this day to rest, photograph, or walk the surrounding paths and villages independently.
4Public Bus to Longji, Hiking Through Dragon's Backbone Rice TerracesLongji · Dragon's Backbone Rice Terraces · Ping'an Village area
A three-hour public bus journey northward through mountainous terrain brings you to Longji and the Ping'an Village area. The Dragon's Backbone Rice Terraces—named for their resemblance to dragon scales, with the mountain ridge forming the dragon's backbone—have been cultivated for over 650 years by local Zhuang farmers. The terrace system covers steep mountainsides in a patchwork of fields, irrigation channels, and stone-built paths. After checking into a local guesthouse, a hiking route through the valley passes waterfalls, bamboo groves, chestnut forests, and stone pathways. While some sections involve climbing, the majority of the hike follows established paths that trace the contours between terraces.
5Ping'an Village, Huangluo Yao, and Bullet Train to ChengduPing'an Village · Huangluo Yao · Guilin station to Chengdu · Chengdu station
Begin with a short hike around Ping'an Village, then board a sightseeing bus to Huangluo Yao—known as the Long-hair Village—where Yao women wear traditional red embroidered dress. After an hour exploring the village, drive ninety minutes to Guilin station and board the bullet train westward. The six-hour rail journey crosses into Sichuan province, traveling through mountain passes and river valleys before arriving in Chengdu. Upon arrival, your guide meets you at the station for a short orientation walk before settling into your accommodation for three nights.
6Chengdu Panda Breeding Center and Optional Afternoon ActivitiesChengdu · Chengdu's Panda Breeding Center
Spend the morning at Chengdu's Panda Breeding Center, where you observe Giant Pandas as part of the center's conservation breeding program. The animals move between eating, playing, resting, and climbing, offering opportunities for photography and observation. The afternoon is free. Optional activities include a Sichuan cooking class where you learn to prepare local cuisine, or an evening traditional Sichuan opera performance in a local theater. Many travelers choose to rest or visit Chengdu's central district independently.
7Chengdu: Free Day with Optional ExcursionsChengdu · Leshan · tea plantation
The day is unstructured. One option is a half-day excursion south to Leshan, where the Great Buddha sits carved into a cliff face at the confluence of the Min, Qingyi, and Dadu rivers. En route, a tea plantation visit demonstrates traditional Chinese tea production methods. Evening options include dining on Sichuan hot pot or attending a karaoke venue. Alternatively, spend the day exploring Chengdu's neighborhoods, markets, or gardens independently.
8Chengdu: Departure or Optional Wenshu Monastery VisitChengdu · Wenshu Monastery
Your final morning allows for a late start, an early exploration of remaining Chengdu sights, or an optional visit to Wenshu Monastery—Chengdu's largest and best-preserved Buddhist temple. The monastery welcomes visitors for individual prayer, ritual participation, and meditation without entry charge; incense is provided by the temple. Around 6 p.m., you depart with your local guide and group. International flights typically depart Chengdu after 8 p.m., allowing time to reach the airport by taxi or arranged transport.
