Bhutan's Western Triangle: Thimphu, Punakha & Paro — 7 Days

Three valleys across Bhutan's west, centered on a regional festival, with monastery hikes and river culture.

This seven-day itinerary moves through Bhutan's three most-visited western districts, timed to coincide with Tshechu — the annual religious festival held in Thimphu, Punakha, or Paro depending on the calendar year. You'll travel across mountain passes, from the capital city of Thimphu to the old royal seat of Punakha and across to the Paro Valley, where the country's only international airport sits. The route is deliberately compact; distances between towns range from 45 minutes to three hours by private vehicle. Along the way, you'll visit dzongs (fortress-monasteries), hike to ridge-top temples, attempt the national sport of archery, and witness masked dance performances that follow ritual forms unchanged for centuries. Accommodation is in three-star and three-star superior properties; meals are half-board, with dinners included and lunches flexible.

Best time to go: Feb/ Mar/ Apr/ Sept/ Oct
