Bhutan's Royal Dzongs and Sacred Sites — 11 Days

From Thimphu to Bumthang: Royal palaces, trade centers, and the Jambay Lhakhang Festival

This 11-day journey traces the arc of Bhutanese statecraft and sacred geography, moving from the western administrative center of Thimphu through the valleys and fortified dzongs that anchored the kingdom's medieval power. The route passes through Punakha, the former capital where royal authority took physical form in stone; Trongsa, the historical pivot between east and west; and Bumthang, the cultural heartland where the Jambay Lhakhang Tshechu festival draws masked dancers and pilgrims each autumn. Along the way, visitors encounter textile traditions, fortress museums, and the remains of early Buddhist practitioners in caves and temple grounds. The arc concludes in Paro, where the Tiger's Nest Monastery clings to a cliff face above a valley floor, and the National Museum holds centuries of royal regalia and religious art.
