Beijing to Xi'an: Huashan's Five Peaks and Terracotta Warriors — 2 Days

Rail journey from Beijing to Huashan's cliff trails, then to Xi'an's archaeological sites and city walls

This two-day journey moves south by fast train from Beijing to Huashan, where you'll traverse the mountain's five peaks across 12 kilometers of cliff-edge trails, then descend to Xi'an to examine the Terracotta Warriors and cycle the city's 13-kilometer ancient wall before returning to Beijing by overnight train. The trip combines high-altitude exposure—Ear-Touching Cliff, Heavenward Ladder, Black Dragon Ridge—with archaeological depth, visiting the 6,000-figure Terracotta Army discovered in 1976 after two millennia underground.

Highlights

  • Hike the five peaks of Huashan: North Peak, Middle Peak (Jade Maiden), East Peak (Facing Sun), South Peak (Landing Wild Geese), and West Peak, connected by cliff-edge trails including the Ear-Touching Cliff and Black Dragon Ridge
  • Traverse the Golden Lock Pass and descend by cable car from the West Peak after summiting all five peaks
  • View three open pits of the Terracotta Warriors, where nearly 2,000 of the 6,000 individually sculpted clay figures stand in formation
  • Cycle around Xi'an's 13-kilometer ancient city wall, the most significant and best-preserved in China
  • Walk the Muslim Quarter of Xi'an before boarding an overnight soft-sleeper train back to Beijing

Day by day

1Beijing to Huashan: The Five PeaksBeijing railway station · North Peak · Ear-Touching Cliff · Heavenward Ladder · Black Dragon Ridge · Golden Lock Pass · Middle Peak (Jade Maiden Peak) · East Peak (Facing Sun Peak) · South Peak (Landing Wild Geese Peak) · West Peak
Hotel pickup leads to Beijing railway station for a five-hour fast train to Huashan. Upon arrival, a cable car ascends to the North Peak, where the day's climbing begins. The route traces the mountain's cliff-edge passages—Ear-Touching Cliff and Heavenward Ladder—before reaching Black Dragon Ridge and the Golden Lock Pass. From there, the path continues through the Middle Peak (Jade Maiden Peak) and East Peak (Facing Sun Peak), then descends to South Peak (Landing Wild Geese Peak) before a final push to the West Peak, the mountain's highest and most dramatic summit. The West Peak's sheer rock faces and exposure make it the symbolic center of Huashan's experience. Total hiking covers 12 kilometers and approximately four hours of walking, distributed across the day with rest periods and a meal break at mid-elevation. A cable car descent from the West Peak returns you to the mountain's base and your hotel for the night.
2Xi'an: Terracotta Warriors, Ancient Walls, and Muslim QuarterMuslim Quarter · Terracotta Warriors site · Xi'an's ancient city wall · Beijing
The morning journey moves one hour from Huashan to Xi'an's Terracotta Warriors site. The three open pits display nearly 2,000 of the 6,000 clay figures—each individually sculpted with distinct costume, height, and facial expression—standing in battle formation as they were left buried for 2,000 years before their discovery in 1976 by farmers digging a well. After the archaeological site, a cycling tour circles Xi'an's ancient city wall, a 13-kilometer route around the most significant and best-preserved wall structure remaining in China. The afternoon includes a walk through the Muslim Quarter's narrow streets before an evening departure by soft-sleeper train back to Beijing, arriving the following morning.
